A Night of Resilience with Geneviève Salamone

Experience a Night of Resilience with Geneviève Salamone at xBk on Saturday May 21st at 7pm. Celebrating the one-year anniversary of her debut original album, Catharsis, this production will feature highlights and collaborations from the award-winning album as well as the unveiling of Ms. Salamone’s Resilience Grant project through the Iowa Arts Council.

Catharsis, meaning the release of pent-up emotions, the music from the album traces Geneviève’s journey in confronting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder through powerful violin and synth instrumentals; each piece of music reflecting a different emotion along her recovery journey. Paired with stunning music video visuals from the Vine Productions, performers for this musical event include the Dueling Fiddles, aerialist Felicia Coe, Traditional Indigenous Dancer Josée Gros-Louis, singer/songwriter Sara Routh, pianist Sarah Vanderpool, Indigenous Drummer Ralph Moisa Jr., and from Montréal, singer Eric Biard-Goble.

Grantee of the Iowa Art Council’s Resilience Grant, Ms. Salamone focused her project to raise awareness on critical Indigenous issues such as the Indian Residential Schools and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’s movement (MMIW). To date, the bodies of 10,028 Indigenous children have been discovered on the sites of ‘Indian’ Residential or Boarding Schools across Canada and the United States. Paired with heart wrenching visuals in collaboration with the Vine Productions, pianist Sarah Vanderpool, and local Indigenous activists, “Les Petits Mocs” is a tribute piece to raise awareness on the children who never made it home from the Indian Residential Schools. Also premiering on the evening of May 21st as part of the Resilience Grant: “The Unforgotten” is an awareness piece about the Missing Murdered Indigenous Women in collaboration with prominent Indigenous designer Dante Biss-Grayson from Sky Eagle Collection. Murder being one of the leading causes of death in Indigenous women, Dante’s spoken word performance is accompanied with original music composed by Geneviève Salamone and striking visuals from the Vine Productions. Support for these projects provided by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

Geneviève Umęndaterih (She Recognizes Her Voice) Salamone is a professional violinist, producer and composer from the Huron-Wendat Nation. After overcoming 15 years of childhood sexual abuse, she uses her platform to raise awareness on issues surrounding mental health, sexual violence and Indigenous issues such as the Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and the Indian Residential Schools. She holds a degree in Violin Performance and Indigenous Studies from McGill University. She may currently be found performing with her violin duo, the Dueling Fiddles, and producing award-winning music in her own recording studio, Wendat Records.
